Tighten sagging skin around the facial area

What is a Facelift?

Facelift surgery, also known as a rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgery procedure performed to tighten the skin around your face, providing your face with a more taut and youthful appearance. The Facelift procedure is achieved by lifting and pulling back the sagging skin that usually appears around the lower half of the face and neck.

Our skin begins to age over time with the earliest signs of this usually appearing on the face and neck area, where the skin tends to be at its most delicate. Fine lines and sagging skin commonly starts to develop in our forties, as we proceed through to our fifties, much deeper wrinkles and volume loss becomes apparent. This process can usually be further escalated dependent on your lifestyle. Many factors such as stress, smoking, poor nutrition, a lack of sleep and excessive sun exposure will all have a negative and physical impact on our skin over time.

If you are considering undertaking facelift surgery, there are many common concerns that the procedure addresses. Examples of this include the development of drooping eyebrows, bags forming around the upper and lower eyelids, any drooping or sagging skin around the face and neck, a loss of plumpness around the cheeks, as well as deep wrinkles. Facelift surgery can help to address the following concerns:

  • Jowls or excess skin around your lower jawline
  • Sagging or flabby skin around the face and neckline
  • Signs of ageing such as wrinkles and fine lines
  • Drooping skin at the corners of the mouth
  • Deep creases between the cheeks and the lips

All treatments are tailored to the individual and personal experiences and results may vary. We recommend a one to one consultation with our Treatment Coordinators to discuss your treatment options.

What Happens During Facelift Surgery?

Facelift surgery involves the lifting and repositioning of the skin and soft tissue on the face. During a facelift procedure, the surgeon will make incisions around the hairline and above the temples, then continuing down in front of the ear, finishing behind the earlobes.

The facial skin is then carefully lifted, with any excess skin carefully removed. The underlying tissue may then be sculpted further before the skin is then repositioned and stitched. If you wanted your jawline to be lifted, incision points will also be made under the chin by your surgeon, before the surplus skin is then removed.

Once this has been achieved, the face will then be bandaged to minimize any bruising and swelling appearing. The Facelift surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic, meaning patients are asleep throughout the procedure and will be unable to feel any pain.

The time the procedure takes is approximately two to five hours and usually requires the patient to stay overnight in our partner private hospital. Should you experience any discomfort following the procedure, we will provide you with pain relief.

How Long Is the Recovery Time After a Facelift & is there any Downtime?

The recovery time following a facelift is usually around six to eight weeks, with patients advised not to return to work during this time. Bruising and swelling will be visible for at least two weeks following the procedure and we recommend that the dressings we provide should stay on for a couple of days after Facelift surgery. You should avoid showering or getting the dressing wet during this time, with the stitches usually removed around one week after Facelift surgery. We also want to advise that you shouldn’t drive for at least several days following Facelift surgery.

When Will the Results be Visible of Facelift Surgery?

A week after Facelift surgery, patients usually return to the clinic to have their stitches removed. The face and neck may feel tight or swollen during this time, but this will settle down. The bruising, scarring and redness will also begin to fade several weeks after the Facelift surgery. It can take approximately six to nine months to completely see the full results of your facelift.

Risks, Complications & Limitations of Facelift Surgery

Following having Facelift surgery, you may experience:

  • A stiff, puffy and numb face: this can usually last for a few weeks or even occasionally a few months.
  • Temporary bruising of the cheeks: these bruises can often move down the face to the neck area.
  • Scarring: this will fade over time but will not completely disappear. The scarring can sometimes cause a raised hairline or sideburns.

Facelift surgery can occasionally result in problems arising, which can include:

  • A haematoma, which is a collection of blood underneath the skin.
  • Nerve injury and loss of sensation or movement in the face.
  • Asymmetrical facial features, that can include an uneven position of the earlobes.
  • Hair loss or a small, but permanent reduction in the hair’s growth around the scars.
  • Rarely, poor healing can cause scars to appear thicker or darker than usual.

Step by Step Facelift Surgery

1 No Obligation Consultation

We offer a no-obligation consultation with one of our expert Treatment Coordinators, who will talk to you about your concerns and goals and discuss your treatment options for Facelift surgery. This will also give you the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about your Facelift surgery.

2 Meet with our practitioners

We will always arrange for you to meet with your Surgeon before any treatment begins. This will allow you to discuss the Facelift surgery in much more detail and allow you to express any concerns that you may have. Your Treatment Coordinator will then put your procedure schedule in place, and will book in any necessary tests, as well as arranging your bespoke aftercare plan for optimal results. We will also offer a 14-day cooling-off period so if you should decide to change your mind about Facelift surgery, we will honour this.

3 Before the Facelift Surgery

On the day of your facelift procedure, you will meet with your surgeon again to discuss your surgical plan. The surgeon will mark up the area to undertake Facelift surgery and go through the surgical consent with you. This is where you will have the opportunity to discuss with your surgeon any further questions or concerns.

Once you have been escorted to the operation theatre, your Anaesthetist will administer the anaesthetic which will ensure that you are as comfortable as possible and the procedure is pain-free.
